I stumbled on my love for the science of Nutrition through a class in my undergraduate program that I was taking for a pre-pharmacy major. Well, I loved the class so much that I asked the professor, "what kind of career can I do that pertains to this class?" She directed me to the Food Nutrition & Dietetics major to become a dietitian.
I fell in love with the Pacific Northwest while visiting a college roommate and a friend I had met during the dietetic internship. After completing my dietetic internship at The University of Iowa, my family helped me pack up my car to move across the country to Seattle, Washington. I began my dream job of being a pediatric dietitian at Seattle Children's Hospital.
My mentors, the veteran dietitians at Seattle Children's Hospital introduced me to the research around childhood feeding done by Ellyn Satter, MS, MSSW, RDN. The Satter Feeding Dynamics Model (fdSatter) and The Eating Competence Model (ecSatter) demonstrate how to feed ourselves and our children faithfully. These models are food neutral and weight neutral.
I loved getting to work closely with families—both parents and children—who were experiencing eating woes in the household. After 13 years of working at Seattle Children's Hospital, I decided to start the adventure of North Sound Nourishment & Recovery.
